Finally!

After undergoing numerous revisions, security audits, and privacy reviews, the First National Rollout of a Mobile Identity ecosystem in Africa has arrived.

"Where is my ID Card?" - It is here. And it is free!

The Mobile ID is issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Federal Ministry of Communications & Digital Economy on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

What do you need?

To obtain your Mobile ID, you will need a National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission or one of its accredited agents, as well as a mobile number.

You can securely link your mobile number to your NIN. In this official release, you have the option to add up to 6 additional mobile numbers to comply with the NCC's requirements. This process can easily be done from the comfort of your home. Once you have accessed the main dashboard, look for "My Devices" and enter the mobile numbers one at a time. If you complete this exercise before January 31st, 2021, the verification OTP will be delivered free of charge. After that date, any SMS charges will be determined by the telco.

Where can I use it?

The Mobile ID serves as a valid means of identification anywhere within the Federal Republic of Nigeria, alongside your physical National ID Card, passport, driver's license, and/or voter's ID card. If you are denied service anywhere you present this ID, please send an email to [email protected]. The relevant department will take appropriate action. It is important to note that your ID must be verified immediately upon presentation. Do not allow anyone to make photocopies or scan it. If someone wishes to have a copy for their records, they should use their own NIMC Mobile ID to scan the QR code on the ID page. Then, they can log into the portal at https://myportal.nimc.gov.ng to print out the verification sheet. Protect your identity by not allowing unauthorized duplication.

By default, only basic information will be displayed under "Show My ID". To view additional information such as your date of birth, nationality, and gender, click on the "FullID" button in the top right corner of the screen. Only the information you choose to display will be verifiable, and verifiers will not be able to store your ID on their phones.
